ACRONYMS & DEFINITIONS

AF: Auto Focus

APS: Advanced Photo System. A consumer format developed by Kodak to try to convince people AGAIN that smaller negatives were the way to go.

SLR: Single Lens Reflex. A camera that has one lens for both composing the frame and capturing the image, as opposed to using a Range Finder ie, one looks through the same lens as the one that takes the picture. Before the SLR there was the TLR or Twin Lens Reflex which had a separate 'taking' lens and 'viewing' lens. Whenever you see the word 'Reflex' (or see the word '-flex' in the name of one of the older model cameras) you can be sure that there is a mirror involved. (Another name for mirror lenses is a 'reflex' lens because it also has a mirror.)
The SLR mirror reflects light into the viewfinder and must move out of the way in to expose the film. SLR vibration caused by moving the mirror may be significant for a very steady shot. An SLR camera's focus mechanism can be either manual or automatic.

Rangefinder: A camera that determines focus by calculating the distance (range) to the subject. These don't have mirrors and so are not 'reflex' but do have a separate viewing lens, so are prone to 'parallax error' at close distances. If a camera determines the distance to the subject, it has a rangefinder. A rangefinder camera's focus mechanism can be manual or automatic.
