1. Create a data partition, solely for your data, early so that data backups are quick and easy.
2. Buy/Use a tape drive or DVD read/write.
3. If you can afford it, buy a good software backup utility package, such as Norton Ghost.
4. Make backup copies of new and critical data often.
5. Boot from floppy disk before backing to or restoring program and system files so that no active files are missed.
6. Archive your core system installation prior to installing additional software.
7. Always update your backup prior to installing new software or updates (including Microsoft's).
8. Archive 3 or more sets of backups from different previous stable software installations.
9. Assume that every new software installation will fail or cause a major system malfunction.
10. Wait a period of time between new software installations to establish confidence in your system stability.
11. Avoid the temptation to obtain the "latest and greatest" software. New software releases should always be considered in a field test (call it gamma) stage for some months. Wait for the revisions. Let the professionals and amateurs battle through gamma.
