PC100 vs. PC133 memory modules: A PC with a 133MHz front side bus (FSB name given to the speed in Mhz with which different components speak to the CPU) needs PC133 SDRAM. A PC with a 100MHz FSB can use either PC100 or PC133 SDRAM. PC's that can use PC100 SDRAM can also use PC133 SDRAM. Memory will only run as fast as the system's slowest link. If a 100MHz FSB or any PC100 modules are installed, PC133 modules will operate at 100MHz.

With a 100MHz FSB, PC133 SDRAM offers no operational benefit over PC100 SDRAM, but if you upgrade to a system with a 133MHz FSB, the new system may be able to use the PC133.

Mixing PC100 and PC133 memory: PC100 and PC133 memory usually can be used in the same machine, but memory will typically run at the speed of the slower modules. Not all machines accept modules of different speeds. Sometimes updating the system's BIOS corrects this, but if not, it is usually best to use only the speed specified by the motherboard manufacturer.

Slot Numbers: Typically the memory sockets (or slots) are marked 0, 1, 2, 3... If there are no labels on the motherboard, the socket closest to the CPU should be considered socket zero (or the first socket).
